Google has officially opened its first AI research laboratory in Islamabad, marking a significant milestone for Pakistan technology ecosystem. The lab will focus on Urdu natural language processing, climate modeling for South Asia, and agricultural AI applications.
The facility houses 40 researchers and engineers, with plans to expand to 100 by 2027. Google invested $15 million in the lab, which includes GPU compute clusters and a dedicated data center.
The lab has already published three research papers on Urdu language models, achieving state-of-the-art results on Urdu benchmark datasets. Researchers are developing a multilingual AI assistant optimized for Pakistani languages including Urdu, Sindhi, Pashto, and Balochi.
Google VP of Research stated that Pakistan young talent pool and growing tech ecosystem made it an ideal location for AI research. “The challenges in South Asia — from agriculture to healthcare — require locally-trained AI models that understand the cultural and linguistic context.”
The lab will partner with local universities including LUMS, NUST, and FAST-NUCES for joint research programs and internship opportunities.
